Trollhättan is located at the heart of western Sweden -bordering on Denmark and Norway -and constitutes a natural center in Scandinavia. The region ’s foremost features are a dynamic business community, first-rate infrastructure and proximity to important cities and markets. Indeed, western Sweden is at the forefront in Europe in such areas as technology, medicine and environment, with more than half of Scandinavia ’s industry located in or around the region.
1.4 million people live within a 100 km radius of Trollhättan. There are more than 600,000 jobs, 25% of them in the manufacturing industry.
There are some 160,000 inhabitants within commuting distance of Trollhättan. In the main, these are divided up between the towns Trollhättan, 54,000 inhabitants, Vänersborg, Uddevalla and Lysekil with 37,000, 49,000 and 15,000 respectively. This commuter region provides work for a total of 68,000 people.
Communications General
With its extensive road, water and railway transportation system, the Göta River valley is one of western Sweden’s most crucial communication hubs. Trollhättan’s location, 80 km north of Göteborg, offers easy and speedy access to international markets with all types of transportation. Göteborg is western Sweden’s logistics center, not least thanks to Scandinavia’s largest port. Moreover, the city has an international airport and is western Scandinavia ’s main road and railway junction.
Ports
Trollhättan
Trollhättan's own port is an inland port with links to Göteborg and the North Sea via the Göta River. It boasts a terminal capacity for loading and unloading small-scale vessels with a loading capacity of up to 3,500 tons. Trollhättan is also a port of call for ships bound directly for the continent and feeder traffic to the Göteborg deep water port.
Göteborg
Göteborg port is Scandinavia ’s largest, with terminals for all types of cargo as well as an extensive organization for services related to the port. The port not only has daily connections with the British Isles and the European continent, but also direct routes to North and South America, Eastern Europe, Australia and the Far East. Transport times between Trollhättan and Göteborg port are approx.60 minutes by either road or rail, and roughly 8 hours by boat.
Uddevalla and Lysekil
The Uddevalla and Lysekil deep water ports are situated in the Fyrstad region. Both ports offer international cargo departures to the British Isles, France, the Mediterranean countries, Africa, Asia and Latin America. The ports are located within 30 to 60 minutes from Trollhättan and are easy to access for rail and road loads.
Air traffic
The Trollhättan Vänersborgs Airport is located just 10 minutes from the town center, operating daily flights to the two airports in Stockholm. The flight time is just less than 1 hour.
The Göteborg-Landvetter Airport is a one and a half hour trip from Trollhättan. Göteborg-Landvetter is Scandinavia ’s fourth largest airport. Routes are operated by 20 regular airlines and offer 107 direct links per day to 30 different domestic and international destinations. Five airlines are currently operating cargo flights primarily between Scandinavia, the Far East and the US.
Rail transportation
Trollhättan is located on the rail route connecting three of Scandinavia's largest urban areas: Oslo, Göteborg and Copenhagen. Thanks to this, Trollhättan is able to provide first-rate passenger and freight connections. Freight traffic is to the tune of 20 trains per day on weekdays. Göteborg, where the lion's share of the region's shunting and reloading between various types of transportation takes place, provides direct and frequent train departures to various logistic centers across Europe. The northernmost parts of Europe can be reached within 24 hours, Central and Eastern Europe and British Isles within two days, whilst most of the Mediterranean can be reached inside 3 days. These times will be cut when fixed links between Sweden and the continent are completed.
Roads
Trollhättan is a junction for several national highways. National highway 45 connects Trollhättan both to Göteborg and the trans-European highway, E 6, western Scandinavia’s main artery to the continent. National highway 44 offers links with the ports of Uddevalla and Lysekil as well as the E 20 and Stockholm. National highways 42 and 47 connect to industrial and communications centers in south-western Sweden. Regular ship and air-traffic routes to countries in the Baltic region are located here.
